Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to Your Questions About Salem-Keizer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy

Q1: “Are these Jiu-Jitsu classes fun?”

YES! Our Jiu-Jitsu classes are not only educational, but also loads of fun. Instructors use a mix of drills, games, and exercises to keep everyone engaged and eager to learn. Plus, the classes are a great way to make new friends and enjoy the experience together.

Q2: “Do kids get injured in Martial Arts?”

While injuries can occur in any physical activity, including martial arts, the risk of injury in martial arts is generally low.  Our Instructors prioritize the safety of our students and provide a well-supervised training environment.

Q3: “My child isn't particularly athletic. Can they still participate in Jiu-Jitsu-Jitsu?”

Absolutely. Martial Arts teaches kids to be coordinated, flexible and strong. Kids who don't naturally have these qualities develop them. Kids who do have these qualities grow them even more.

Q4: "How old does my child have to be to start your Jiu-Jitsu Program?"

Because of Jiu-Jitsu is a more complex martial art, we start students at age 6, or close to it. If you want your child to have early martial arts exposure, some other martial arts, like Karate & Taekwondo start students around 4.

Q1: "What level of physical fitness does Brazilian Jiu Jitsu require?"

You don’t need to be “in shape,” but you should have a foundation of regular physical activity. Adult Jiu-Jitsu is physically demanding, and we want students to feel prepared, confident, and successful from day one.

Q2: "Can I do Jiu-Jitsu if I have a previous injury or preexisting condition?"

It depends. Since Jiu-Jitsu is very physical, we do advise speaking with your doctor first if you have concerns or previous injuries or surgeries that could be impacted.

Q3: "Are there women in the classes?"

Yes! While the majority of our Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu students are men, women regularly train and have an excellent experience as well. We typically have four to six women in each class, creating a supportive and welcoming environment.

Q4: "Am I too old to start learning Jiu-Jitsu?

Most of our adult students fall between ages 25–40, though we do have outliers on both ends of the spectrum. Regardless of age, the training is designed to help you feel strong, capable, and empowered. It’s an excellent way to challenge yourself both physically and mentally.
